As the rumors for this season started streaming in, I got really excited for this episode in particular. Shelby was back, she was singing a song with Rachel, and there was a cute Finchel moment, I knew it was gonna be good. Glee didn't disappoint this week, and it's making me love it all over again. The episode was amazing and honestly I didn't even love the songs this week. For me I really think the continuity was what made me love the episode so much. So many times before I have complained about how Glee so often loses continuity, this episode however Glee had continuity for miles and brought back so many storylines everyone has been wondering about.
I have to say that Brittany was so endearing this episode. She honestly did want to help Kurt even if it was a little over the top. I love her when she is hilarious with her dead pan one liners but I liked her even more this episode. Even when she was telling Kurt she was also running for class president she wasn't spiteful or mean about it.
For Kurt however I see trouble and not with the class president run, but with Blaine. From the first episode we saw Kurt bringing up the issue of competition between him and Blaine and now that Blaine has transferred that issue has intensified. In just about every interaction between the two there was this underlying tension. Then at the end of the episode we left Blaine contemplating reading for Tony, and Kurt walking away hurt. With all of these issues building I don't think Kurt and Blaine are going to have an easy relationship this season.
One of the most interesting parts of the episode for me was the impact Shelby's return had. First of all I am so happy that Idina Menzel is back, I love her and hearing her sing is fantastic. Somewhere was amazing. The way they filmed Rachel practicing and then turned it into her really
auditioning was so interesting. I'm waiting anxiously to see how her relationship with Rachel is going to develop. Rachel is clearly hurt but Shelby does want to make things right, so I see things changing with them.
Last night seeing Puck reacting and dealing with Shelby and Beth being back was so touching. His character growth was so moving this week. When he was with Beth you could just tell how in love with that little girl he was and how desperately he wanted to be in her life some way. I mean Mark Salling was just fantastic this episode. Similarly I think Quinn had a terrific story this episode. Finally we got to see real emotion out of Quinn regarding something she had been burying for so long. We also got a more substantial reason as to why she is acting like she is, she's lost and really feels like she has nothing else to lose. I love when we get to see glimpses of the real Quinn. That said though, at the end I went right back to disliking her. She's still a mess but yet she wants to get her baby back from someone who truly loves her and can take care of her properly. It's just so disappointing. That same part of me that dislikes Quinn was just loving it when Schuester and Puck both told her to grow up. I am so happy now that Schuester is starting to protect the Glee club from people who most times are out to ruin it. Now that he is back to being a strong director, I feel like the club is on a really good track to get back to Nationals.
I left my favorite part of the episode for last, the Finchel of it all. Although they didn't get a lot of screen time, as with last week, what they got was fulfilling. First of all I loved at the beginning in the choir room when they were acting like a couple who had been together for years. It's adorable. The tire shop scene while adorable with her helping him was so much more than that. I really think it was the beginning of Finn finally starting to believe in himself again. Last season was a mess for Finn but now Rachel is supporting him in his decisions, but at the same time pushing him to be better. She knows he's better than that and is gonna be there to help him realize it. The scene was also a wonderful example of how much their relationship has grown and it's so fantastic to see as a shipper. I've wanted this kind of happiness for them for so long.
I think Rachel's comment to Finn about being better than the tire shop was such a fantastic contrast to the future Quinn had planned out for him. Quinn already had him stuck in Lima, and didn't even include the fact that Finn could possibly be so much better than that, as opposed to Rachel where she's supportive of him if Lima really does make him happy but at the same time, she knows he's better than that and she tells him just that. Also I really loved that he told Rachel she was the best girlfriend ever, it was a great parallel to Britney/Brittany when Rachel told him that she had never been this happy before. In my mind it should put every question and worry to rest because Finn and Rachel have both stated, in different words, that they are the happiest when they are with each other and they will always be each others' first choices.
I loved that the scene following that was Finn learning to dance. Yet again we have someone else important in Finn's life, Mr. Schuester, telling him that they believe in him. Then when he finally nailed the move I think it really put the spark back into him. Finn is now starting to believe in himself again and those two moments were the catalysts for that change. Now that this is happening, I think it's just going to lead to fantastic things for Finchel.
Looking to next week: I have to say my emotions are all over the place. The promo look so dramatic and all the comments about the screeners are making me think I'm going to be crying the whole episode. Seeing that part in the episode when Finn is holding Rachel in the wings just made me so happy. Rachel has someone now to support her and help her through hard times and I love that it's Finn. I think the Diva-off is going to be amazing, and I'm so excited to hear the songs. Yet again, I can't wait!
xoxo,
Amanda
