DIY Not-so-nautical rope headband

I know I am way late in the season to be doing a nautical themed DIY but my favorite craft store just got in some cute rope cording and I had to do this DIY.  Don't worry about it being out of season because in the end this headband doesn't read as nautical at all.

Remember when Gossip Girl first premiered and Blair Waldorf became the queen of headbands?  Well in one episode she wore this gorgeous gold knot headband that I fell in love with. I eventually DIY'ed it and because it was such a simple project I decided I wanted to make more now that my craft store got in new rope.

Supplies-
2 yards of craft cording- any size you like is fine
Headband- make sure it's wide enough for two strands of the cording to cover.
Glue gun

Start by creating the first knot, I saw a version of this knot on the internet years ago but I honestly can't remember where. Mine's a little different though since you double the knots. These steps are a lot easier to understand through pictures so I took a bunch to show you.

First take the cording and fold it in half. Then take and lay the right side over the left and then do right over left again.

Then take the loop where the center of the cording is and bring it back through the loop on the other side.

Once you pull both ends to tighten the knot it should look like this.

Now you are going to do the same thing again to create the second knot.

Now you should have a cool interesting knot. It doesn't have to be perfect just as long as you think the knot looks cool, it works.

After the knot is made I flipped it over and hot glued it together. You don't want the glue to seep through so only put just enough glue to keep the knot from coming undone. I don't have a picture of this part but if you enlarge the picture above, you can see a little bit of what I mean.

To attach it to the headband I started by gluing the knot first, as you can see in the above photo. Put a bead of glue on the headband and attached the knot only. I put mine off centered about 2 inches up one side of the headband.

Then begin attaching the strands from the knot to the headband. For the one side of the knot where the ends come up over the knot I just put glue on the band really close to knot and pushed the strands into the glue so it butts up against the knot. Now there won't be a gap between the headband and the cording.

Continue putting beads of glue along the headband and gluing down both cord strands until you get to the ends. I didn't think there was a need to photograph this part because you can see how it's supposed to look from the final pictures.

See how the end is coated in glue.
Finishing the ends is tricky. I start by gluing the cording to the headband all the way to the ends. Then I clip the ends of the cording flush against the headband. After that I take the glue gun and thoroughly coat the ends in glue. This works for three reasons: it keeps the ends from unraveling which this cording does very easily, then it makes the headband more comfortable for me, and three, I seriously have no other clue how to keep this stuff from coming unraveled.

See-it really isn't all that nautical at all right?! I just think it's a cool knotted rope headband.

Oh my gosh I have been trying to figure out how to make these knots for the longest time. This is probably the BEST explanation yet!
Thanks (love your blog!)

I absolutely love this! I found you off craftgawker. Where do you get the headbands? I am looking for some. Thanks!

@Melody

I bought my headbands at my local dollar store. Mine came in a pack of 6 I think. Really any flat, thin headband will work, just as long as the two strands of cording will cover it completely.
