Please check-out my updated version of this dress here!!!
I was able to finish my "Hello Goodbye" dress from Glee this weekend and I think its seriously fantastic. This is one of my favorite group performances on Glee and a few weeks ago when I realized that the costume designer diy'ed this dress I knew I had to try to recreate it myself.
Glee's stylist used a Target dress and some thick white ribbon to create this simple but stunning dress. It's gorgeous and looks great on every girl.
When I decided I wanted to make this dress I seriously thought the hardest part would be making the big white bow. In actuality, finding the plain black dress was the obstacle. The dress on Glee was from Target but I couldn't find the dress online or instore. Then I started searching and trolling websites looking for something similar but no one had a plain black scoopneck dress. Finally one night I decided to stop by Target and just look around to see if they had anything I could use. I was about to give up until I spotted a dress that was close to what I wanted. When I tried on my size it wasn't flared enough at the hips so I sized up which gave me the perfect fit on top but the flare I needed on bottom. I took a picture of it on the hanger but it just looks like a black sack so I'm not even posting it.
After that I started altering it to make the top right. The dress needed a wider neckline and thinner straps so all I did was cut the neckline and put bias tape around it. I knew the bow was gonna cover most of it so I wasn't necessarily worried about it being perfect. In the end though the bias tape was fantastic cause it hid my uneven cuts and gave the dress a really polished look. It was also my first time using bias tape but its super easy to use, I am definitely gonna think about using it more.
Once the dress was done I started working on the bow. I went to Jo-Ann's and bought a yard and a half of 2 inch wide matte white ribbon for the bow. Instead of trying to tie the perfect bow, I decided to just make a loop, glue the ends together, and then wrap some ribbon around the center. It was way easier and in my opinion looks a lot more like the Glee dress. For the tails I took another piece and glued it to the back of the original. I used Tacky-Glue which held great and didn't discolor the ribbon. In order to make the folds I used fusible hem tape which is unnoticeable but still held the folds great. I cut the ends, fray-checked them and my bow was done.
To make sure the bow was centered I put the dress on, just eye-balled it and pinned. All I used to attach the ribbon was some white thread which I sewed along the neckline and then I carefully stitched down the cut end of the ribbon tails. For that part I made sure to stitch it so that my thread blended in with the ribbon. That was all! It was seriously really do-able DIY.
I just need a pair of red patent flats and I'm set. Oh and the Golden Globes are Sunday-I'm excited to see who wears what!

Amanda
