A few weeks ago I saw a killer pair of glittered slingbacks at Kohl's. I almost got them but they were wayy too high/street-walker-y for me. Then on last week's episode of Glee, Rachel wore an awesome pair of gold glitter pumps.
Fashion of Glee ID'ed them as this pair of Steve Madden's.
They're adorable and wayy more wearable for me than any other pair I've seen. So I started searching the internet for tutorials on how to make a pair. I found a bunch of ideas and kinda used points from all of them for my pair as well as adding in my own ideas.
I found this pair of black pumps at Payless for around $14.00. I like the shoe it's exactly what I wanted, fabric pump with a round toe and around a 3 inch heel. Fabric was important cause I'm not sure how the glue would hold to a leather or leather like material. I like them but I don't feel bad covering them in glitter.
Next I sanded the polished heel a bit to make sure the glitter would stick.
After that I made a bowl from tin foil and began mixing Mod Podge and my glitter. I only used about half a jar.
I used mod podge mainly because that's what I had in my stash. Other directions just used spray adhesive or didn't combine the glue and glitter but I wanted to make sure I created a really good bond.
Before I started painting I stuffed the shoes with two plastic bags to make sure I didn't glue the inside.
Then I just started painting. Tip though, make sure and do even strokes. Although the glue dries clear if you leave a heap of glue in one spot it will create an uneven finish when it dries. I did about 3-4 whole coats. At the end I just painted certain areas which needed more glitter and sprinkled it on. I worked on this for a while. Finally once I felt it was covered completely I did one final light coat of my glittered Mod Podge.
To seal it even better I sprayed it with 3 light coats of a flexible decoupage sealer. I was seriously about making sure these shoes will hold up against some wear.
Here's the final product!!!
I haven't worn them outside yet but I put them on and walked around the house and they are still just as comfortable as before. The glue didn't make them too stiff so they still bend with my foot as I walk. Also *knock on wood* no glitter is coming off. When I rub my hand over the entire shoe no glitter is left on my hand-which is great!!!
They seriously look fantastic on, I love them!
