With the season finale tonight, I realized I really needed to get my Glee-wind for last week's second episode done.
Don't take my lateness on this post as an indication of my thoughts about the episode because I really loved it. After a season worth of hard work, this episode was an extraordinary pay off.
In all of my excitement surrounding the episode I almost forgot that Jesse was returning. As opposed to his last episode we got to see some wonderful interactions that many fans were dying to see. We see him meet Rachel before the competition. Despite his trash-talk, Rachel is able to break through his bravado to actually have a sweet moment between them by the end. Although their relationship never worked, Rachel was always able to break through that ego, and despite how far apart they are now, she's still able to do that.
Then we have Finn approach in full protective-boyfriend mode. Last year he was still fighting for Rachel's heart. Now he has her (he's even put a ring on it!) and he isn't afraid to flaunt it. He asks if she's ok and they immediately wrap their arms around each other, because no one else matters anyone. No one else is tearing them apart, it's just one another. Rachel leaves and then comes, easily, one of the hottest moments of the show. Jesse finally admitting that Finn has won. They've always been rivals but even now after so much has changed, they still are. This time though Finn has won and Jesse knows it. He congratulates Finn on the engagement as happily as he can manage and they shake hands. It was a symbolic gesture putting they're rivalry to bed once and for all.
After ending they're triangle with Jesse we get Finn and Rachel talking about their wedding which is rapidly approaching. Instead of just obscurely talking about it, they have concrete plans. Finn has the glass for the Jewish side of the ceremony and they have they're honeymoon all planned out. Their engagement wasn't some empty promise, they really want to be married.
We go straight into the best competition performance we've ever seen New Directions give. They had the win in the bag from the start. The Troubletones are great and and even better when they don't flail their arms for a whole performance. We get to see Finn give Rachel a beautiful pep talk, helping lead her to give one of her most spectacular solos ever. It literally is coming back to her, she's found herself again. She nails that song, we even get to see both Jesse and Finn brought to tears because of it. Finally we get my favorite song, Paradise by the dashboard light. It's terrible but just as Glee always does, they make it wonderful. Finn/Cory does his best dancing of the series and everyone just gives their best performance ever. The girls are sassy and the boys are cheeky and fun.
I'm just skipping over the Vocal Adrenaline and judges scenes because I really couldn't have cared less.
Despite everything Jesse has done, I'd like to say I knew/know there is a good person beneath the ego. We see him approach Carmen and you can immediately hear the bravado break down in his voice. I think this is just a small attribute that showcases just what an amazing actor Jon Groff is. Here he is approaching someone who had previously crushed his dream in an attempt to salvage someone else's, someone who has left him behind and moved on. There is no reward for him in talking to Carmen, he get's nothing out of it. Here we see that there is more to Jesse than the egotistical jerk we met the first season.
We get my favorite song of the episode Tongue Tied, showing just how far the Glee club has come since we first met them years ago. The school is now celebrating their win with them. Their peers are happy and cheering for them. The Cheerios are tossing their pom-poms to Rachel and the jocks are hugging Kurt instead of tearing them down. Everyone is kissing their significant others and having a good time together.
We see the kids thank Mr. Schue and then we are left till the finale.
Fair warning-I'm not ready.
xoxo,
Amanda
