My broken Prom heart is healed and better than ever. Last year's Glee Prom broke my heart. If you remember we had Finn and Rachel still broken up, both equally heartbroken. Then we had Jesse coming back to muddle the story even more. On top of that, almost everyone ended up in tears by the end.
This year however, was filled with happiness and I couldn't be more pleased. Coming off last week's sad episode, this was exactly the kind of upbeat episode that makes me love Glee so, so, much.
Seeing Rachel choke last week broke my heart but seeing her pick herself up this week, made my heart swell. A younger Rachel Berry would have wallowed and barricaded herself in her room for weeks, maybe even months. Instead we have her, albeit somewhat sadly, moving forward. She's not letting the last few weeks of her senior year go to waste. (I also loved the Funny Girl homage!) While Rachel's idea of the Anti-Prom may have been laced with a wallowing feeling for herself, I really think the bigger issue came from Finn and Quinn's Prom court campaign.
I feel like the writers never give viewers a chance to really grow to like Quinn. Just when she's becoming likeable they write her into these terrible story lines, that just make everyone dislike her more. By now everyone has heard about Rachel's screw-up and what does Quinn do- ask Finn to campaign with her. Anyone with a brain would know that is gonna push a button with Rachel, Finn still feeling guilt over Quinn's accident accepts to try and ease a little bit of that guilt. Then Rachel reiterates that she's having a crappy go of it lately in their argument. Despite moving forward, the audition is still very raw, and then you see Finn recoil. In an attempt to please everyone Finn messes up and the person he cares most for, gets hurt. Once again this all comes back to Quinn. Then her comment about no extra-curricular activities. I just hate that she still thinks Finn is carrying this torch for her or that given the chance he would take it with her. Ugh. Don't get me wrong- I want to give Quinn a chance to redeem herself, but the writers never give her that opportunity. I did thoroughly enjoy that throughout the whole episode Finn stood his own against her and repeatedly called her out on her crap she always pulls.
To be honest, I'm still processing the argument between Finn and Quinn in the bathroom. I understand that in Finn's mind although Rachel choked she still has the talent to succeed, whereas he had no idea if Quinn was ever going to walk again and that was the thing he felt worse about. He's always believed in Rachel and he knows she's going to be a star. Quinn however, Finn had no clue if she was ever going to recover and he needed to alleviate some of the guilt associated with it. I'm slowly starting to get it.
From then on though, my broken heart was healed. For the rest of the episodes all the wrongs from last year were righted. Finn came to Rachel and now we don't need these huge apologizes, he keeps it simple and Rachel just knows and accepts his apology and then we see them happily stroll into Prom. We get to see them dance and have fun and then the writers really hit us. Finn and Rachel are crowned Prom King and Queen and then literally my heart began to swell. We have Rachel stunned, then we have Finn holding her and reminding her of just how amazing she is. He knows she's struggling, but there he is boosting her back up. We end the episode with them happy, he's kissing her forehead and playing in her hair, and we have the incredibly intimate kiss in the middle of the dancefloor as glitter falls all around them. It was perfect and exactly what I was hoping Prom was going to be this year, especially for Finn and Rachel.
Looking to next week-
I'm so excited for Nationals. Aside from graduation this is the crowning moment of the season and I am literally jumping inside waiting to see what happens. I also am dying to see what happens when Tina starts seeing everyone as someone else. It's going to be hilarious. I can just tell next week is gonna be epic, and it's 2 hours! Woo!
